Banding, also called band ligation, is a treatment for complications due to cirrhosis and is performed during an upper endoscopy. This can be used to stop the bleeding from enlarged veins that may occur in the esophagus or upper stomach. Patients with cirrhosis are at risk for severe bleeding due to the rupture of these veins.

Banding involves applying rubber bands around the veins to eradicate them.
