Visitation policies and procedures

Visitors are welcome during a patient’s stay. Patients can choose who can and cannot visit them while they are in our healthcare facility without regard to legal relationship, race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. Any limits or restrictions on visiting will be based on clinical reasons and will be explained to the patient and visitor. Reasons for restricting visitation may include; safety concerns, patient request, and the risk of infection. Children are welcome to visit, but those under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult other than the patient. If you have any questions, please speak with a caregiver in your clinical area.

Parking

For our visitors’ convenience, parking lots are located adjacent to both University Hospital North and South. Valet parking is available at the North site at the Tower entrance.

Atrium Express

Located at the North site on the first floor, Tower lobby, the Atrium Express offers grab and go foods.

Public Restrooms

Please do not use the bathrooms in patient rooms. They are reserved only for patients in order to protect their health. Public restrooms are located throughout the hospital.

Smoking

It is illegal to smoke anywhere on hospital property. Smoking and second-hand smoke are the chief cause of avoidable illness. Smoking claims 436,000 lives each year in the U.S. and is known to trigger several types of cancer, heart disease, stroke, pregnancy complications respiratory and vascular diseases.

SIUH: A Smoke-Free Campus
Smoking and/or the use of tobacco products is not permitted anywhere in the hospital or on the hospital grounds.

Now a New York City law, SIUH was the first hospital in the city to declare a smoke-free campus aimed at keeping a healthy environment for our patients, family, visitors, medical staff, and employees.

A Commitment to Our Community

  • The program uses evidenced-based strategies that deal with the physical and psychological basis of tobacco addiction.
  • A starter kit of nicotine patches is given to individuals who enroll in the program.
  • Individual and group sessions along with a weekly support group are offered.
  • Education is available on the various types of smoking cessation medications.

Gifts and flowers

Located in the lobby of both hospital sites, our gift shops stock convenience and specialty items. If you need a special gift for someone — birthday, anniversary, holiday, or other any special occasion —visit us in the gift shop or call us and we will have a personal shopper help you select, wrap, and mail your gift.
