Cardiology

Heart disease doesn't just happen to adults. In fact, eight out of every 1,000 children are born with a heart condition, and others may develop or acquire heart disease later in life.

The good news is that constantly improving technology is leading to better, earlier diagnoses that can save lives.  At the Staten Island University Hospital's Pediatric Cardiology Program, we specialize in state-of-the-art technology that often doesn't require surgery, making us a frontrunner in the treatment of children with heart problems.

Safe, non-invasive methods of testing have been almost completely replaced by diagnostic cardiac catheterizations in children of all ages. Using fetal echocardiography and cardiopulmonary testing, babies who are at risk can be diagnosed in the womb.  Learning of a potential problem before birth helps doctors plan prompt, appropriate treatment.

Occasionally, a child may require open-heart surgery to correct a congenital defect.  As part of the Northwell Health system, we work in partnership with the renowned Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park so that your child will benefit from the professional expertise of two of the finest hospitals in the country.

For an open-heart surgery, patients receive treatment locally and travel by special pediatric transport to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where surgeons who are experts in the field of pediatric open-heart surgery perform the operation.  After a brief recovery in Cohen Children's Medical Center pediatric intensive care unit your child returns home to our pediatric intensive care unit, where our highly trained staff carefully monitors the remainder of your child's recovery.

Dentistry

Children in need of dental care benefit from the Pediatric Dental Residency Program at Staten Island University Hospital.

Board certified dentists oversee gentle, compassionate dental care for children – including those with special needs -- from infancy through the teenage years.

We believe strongly in preventive dental care, so children are taught proper nutrition, as well as brushing and flossing techniques.  We use fluoride and sealants (clear plastic coatings) to reduce the occurrence of cavities. For children who are very young or extremely frightened of the dentist, treatment under general anesthesia is available.
