Become a Volunteer at Lenox Hill Hospital

We offer a variety of meaningful volunteer opportunities that impact our patient experience. We welcome volunteers with all backgrounds, abilities and interests on a rolling basis. We are united by the common goal of helping others and serving our patients. Characteristics of our volunteers include being reliable, compassionate, respectful, and a strong communicator. The process of onboarding a volunteer will be completed within four to six weeks.

Adult volunteers: consistent opportunities

Adult volunteers (ages 18+) help patients in numerous areas within the hospital. Below are some of the volunteer opportunities we offer:

  • Surgical Waiting Room: communicate with families during their loved one’s surgery
  • Feeding Program: provide support to patients during their meals
  • Departmental Liaisons: assist staff in departments (e.g., emergency, ambulatory, cardiology) to meet patient needs
  • Reception Ambassadors: welcome patients and families as they enter the hospital
  • Art and Jewelry Therapy: create art and jewelry at the bedside of patients
  • Friendly Visitor Program: socialize with patients as they recover in the hospital

Adult volunteers will be asked to complete an interview, attend a mandatory orientation, medical clearance, and background check. There is a 100 hour time commitment per year, with the expectation of completing one four-hour shift per week. Some of the programs require additional training. 

Junior volunteers (15-17 years old): Summer High School Program



The 4 week summer student volunteer program at Lenox Hill Hospital places individuals throughout the hospital in hands – on, non clinical roles from July 9, 2018- August 3, 2018. The junior volunteers (15-17 years old) have the opportunity to rotate into different areas of the hospital each week depending on their interests. Junior Volunteers are expected to volunteer a minimum of 100 hours during the course of the program, volunteering a minimum of 4 days per week (Monday- Thursday) from 9am- 3pm. Students must be available during the entire time frame of the program.

The program accepts approximately 15 high school students, providing extensive exposure to hospital operations and care delivery. Ideal candidates for the program have an interest in health care, willingness and desire to make an impact, previous volunteer experience, high maturity level and related career interests.

After the application is reviewed, potential candidates will be called in for an interview during the last two weeks of March. Acceptance to the program, will be sent via e-mail thereafter.

Short-term shadowing opportunities

The first step in the shadowing process is to visit Northwell.edu to find a medical professional who works at Lenox Hill Hospital. The next step is to reach out to them by email or phone to see if you could shadow them. Once the connection has been made, please have your identified medical professional contact the volunteer department at the email address below to receive a consent form that they will sign. One may shadow up to 75 hours at Lenox Hill Hospital.
