At the heart of Northwell Health are its hospitals, where the very latest advances in medicine are changing and saving lives every day throughout the New York metropolitan region.
Patients come first in everything we do from personalized care and the use of advanced technologies to cutting-edge research and program support. Your gift directly impacts the health of our community while transforming the future of medicine in your own backyard.
Volunteers are an integral and valuable component of the hospital's staff, and often a source of comfort and cheer to those who are hospitalized.
In 1917, 130 local women formed a "Woman's Auxiliary" at Huntington Hospital, performing many seemingly small tasks designed to lighten the load for the hospital staff. Over time, the name of the organization was changed to Volunteer Services. Men and students joined the roster, and services provided have expanded. However, the sense of dedication and purpose has remained the same. Now, as then, a willingness to help is extremely important to our patients and our organization.
Volunteers have the ability to work in nearly all areas of the hospital, providing support and compassion. The partial list of service choices includes Information Desk, Concierge Services, Patient Transporter, Emergency Department Ambassadors, Surgical Liaison, various Nursing Units, Dolan Family Health Center, Food and Nutrition, Pharmacy, Gift Shop, Mail Service, and Thrift Shop. Needed also are volunteers to combine a warm friendly greeting and assistance to discharged patients leaving the hospital. Everyone from student to retiree will be welcome for this new service. Incidentally, men are always valued as volunteers, particularly in services involving wheelchair assistance.
Information sessions for adults 18 and over are held on the first Wednesday of every month from September through June at 10 am in Gillies Conference Room 1 on the first floor. There are no sessions in July and August.
