At Staten Island University Hospital, we understand the importance of supporting and comforting patients and their families. University Hospice is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to meet the needs of terminally ill patients, their families and their loved ones by providing comprehensive palliative or comfort care. The palliative care focuses on physical, social, emotional and spiritual support. We also offer a range of bereavement services, including support groups and counseling. If you're interested in helping in any of these areas, consider signing up as a hospice volunteer.

Hospice volunteers

University Hospice volunteers are essential members of the hospice team. After completing your volunteer training program, you will be prepared to fill a variety of roles either as a patient care volunteer to provide direct care to hospice patients, or as an administrative volunteer to help with day to day activities in the hospice offices.

Patient care volunteers

As a patient care volunteer, you will visit patients in their homes, or in the nursing home or hospital. In addition to providing companionship and emotional support, you may help with activities that include direct patient care, child care, cooking, cleaning and running errands for the patient and family. As a volunteer, your assistance with daily living activities will relieve many worries and enable the patient and family to have quality time together.

Administrative volunteers

As an administrative volunteer, you will provide a vital service assisting clinical and support staff with a wide variety of office activities. You will frequently interact with hospice patients and families by phone, providing support and encouragement. Your role as a volunteer often extends beyond the death of the hospice patient. You may even become an important part of the bereavement process, helping families cope as they work through their grief.

Requirements

In order to qualify as a hospice volunteer, you must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Personal commitment to the mission and philosophy of University Hospice
  • Completion of a 21-hour training course and orientation program
  • Yearly physical examination
  • Attendance at mandatory in-service education and support groups
