The Genitourinary Cancer Center of Excellence brings together experts from urology, radiation medicine and medical oncology to offer state-of-the-art, comprehensive care for the treatment of bladder, kidney, prostate and testicular cancers. The focus is to eradicate cancer, preserve function and maintain each patient’s quality of life.
The key to successful prostate and genitourinary cancer treatment is multidisciplinary expertise. Patient care is led by specialists in urology, radiation medicine and medical oncology — and is supported by dedicated uro-pathologists — in state-of-the-art offices, modern diagnostic imaging facilities and at several Northwell Health hospitals. The center features one of the few settings in the New York metropolitan area for men with prostate cancer to see a urologist and radiation oncologist in one visit.
Excellence in Genitourinary Cancer Care
Genitourinary Cancer Center of Excellence Highlights:
- Louis Kavoussi, MD has pioneered several new operative techniques, including laparoscopic nephrectomy for cancer and laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, and was part of the team that performed the first laparoscopic prostatectomy to treat prostate cancer.
- In 1992, Louis Potters, MD became the first physician to offer prostate brachytherapy on Long Island and has performed more than 4,500 prostate ‘seed’ implants. Dr. Potters was the first physician to develop the intra-operative real-time dosimetry technique for seed implants, now considered the standard of care for men undergoing this treatment.
- David Samadi, MD has performed nearly 6,000 robotic radical prostatectomies using the latest da Vinci robots, more than any other surgeon in the U.S. In addition, he developed his signature prostate surgery technique known as SMART (Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique)
Every available modern treatment option is within the scope of services and at hand for prostate and genitourinary cancer care at the center.
The physicians are pioneers in the use of groundbreaking treatment technologies and advanced surgical techniques including laparo-endoscopic single site surgery (LESS), which requires just a single small incision to perform even the most complex surgery. The center surgeons were the first in the region to perform a completely robotic neobladder reconstruction for patients with bladder cancer.
The physicians are leaders in minimally invasive surgical treatments. These fellowship-trained specialists in minimally invasive surgery have brought the center to the forefront of laparoscopic and robotic surgery, including laparoscopic/robotic partial nephrectomy, laparo-endoscopic single site surgery (LESS), robotic nerve-sparing prostatectomy and robotic radical cystectomy. The surgeons, specially trained in nerve sparing techniques, are experts in maximizing recovery of urinary and sexual function following prostate surgery.
The Genitourinary Cancer Center of Excellence, is spearheading pioneering research programs in collaboration with The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Many clinical trials are available for patients to participate in, including trials that aid in diet, explore improved sexual function, and focus on novel techniques and procedures for treatment.
