Overview

We offer special services for children with special needs, ages 5 and under.

Staten Island University Hospital is proud to partner with New York State as an Early Childhood Direction Center.  Our free program helps parents and professionals locate and access community services for issues including:

  • Learning problems
  • Delayed language
  • Speech impairment
  • Developmental delays
  • Intellectual disability
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Autism
  • Epilepsy
  • Deafness/hearing impairment
  • Blindness/visual impairment
  • Physical disabilities
  • Behavior/emotional problems
  • Attention deficit disorder
  • Chronic health problems

We can offer information and provide referrals for:

  • Diagnostic and evaluation services
  • Early intervention services
  • Preschool special education
  • Integrated preschool day care and Head Start
  • Respite and homemaker services
  • Special therapies
  • Counseling
  • Medical and dental services
  • Technology resources
  • Entitlements
  • Transportation
  • Parent support groups
  • Financial support
  • Family support services

Referrals are made to agencies and programs both at our hospital and elsewhere to ensure children benefit from the entire spectrum of assistance available in the area.

The New York State Department of Education funds a statewide network of Early Childhood Direction Centers through its Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities.  There are fifteen centers statewide, covering every county in New York State.
