What is diabetes?

We want to educate our patients about diabetes, a lifelong condition in which blood glucose (blood sugar) levels in the body are above normal. It can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and lower-extremity amputations.

Diabetes education and support

Although diabetes is a chronic condition, health complications can be effectively managed and reduced through proper diabetes education and support. At Staten Island University Hospital, our staff includes both adult and pediatric endocrinologists (physicians who specialize in diabetes and hormone disorders) along with certified diabetes educators. Our certified diabetes educators are registered nurses and dieticians who can instruct you on your diabetes self-care and management.

Diabetes self-management program

The Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) at Staten Island University Hospital is nationally recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Our core team of certified diabetes educators (CDE) who coordinate and run the program have the knowlegde to help you through the different stages of your condition.

Our program offers individualized counseling sessions, group classes and support groups to address the day-to-day challenges of living with diabetes. We've organized these group sessions to cover essential topics such as medication management, nutrition, exercise and activity, options for improving glucose control, foot, skin and dental care, and problem-solving to better manage your diabetes. With our dedicated diabetes conference room at the Regina McGinn Education Center, located at the hospital's Ocean Breeze campus in Staten Island, NY, we are able to bring together patients in diabetes education and support groups.
