Radiation Medicine


The Department of Radiation Medicine provides a wide range of radiation medicine services to adult and pediatric patients in Long Island, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island.  The highly experienced radiation oncologists and treatment teams utilize state-of-the-art technology and ensure quality care through evidence based treatment and one-of-a-kind patient safety programs. 

Treatment is provided in a caring and professional environment by staff members that are dedicated to making each patient’s visit as informative and stress-free as possible.  The full time staff is active in research to advance the field of radiation medicine and in educating the next generation of radiation oncologists, physicians who treat cancer with radiation therapy, and medical physicists.

Personalized Radiation Medicine Care

Radiation medicine is the use of radiation, a process where energy emitted by one body travels through another body or through space, is used to damage cancer cells. Radiation is most harmful to quickly growing cells, and therefore damages cancer cells more than normal cells and prevents the cancer cells from growing and dividing.

Each patient is incredibly unique; so is the care and treatment the department provides.  The types of treatment available include:

  • Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  • Image guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery/body radiation therapy (SRS/SBRT)
  • 4-Dimensional simulation is used for simulation of respiratory gating procedures, which allows treatment with a high dose of radiation to cancerous tumors while sparing a larger volume of healthy tissue.
  • Arc radiation therapy is a technique that delivers radiation by rotating the linac gantry (linac head) around the patient in an arc form.  Arc therapy allows the radiation beams to be directed from all possible angles, focusing the dose on the tumor while sparing healthy tissue.  
  • 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) combines multiple treatment fields to deliver precise dose of radiation.
  • Brachytherapy
    • High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy
    • Radioembolization
    • Coronary brachytherapy
    • Radium-223 (Xofigo®)

Department physicians and staff are dedicated to delivering the highest level of quality care with compassion and respect, and committed to ensuring patient safety and satisfaction.

The three pillars of care that support the department’s mission of Smarter Radiation Oncology include:

  • Evidence-based medicine – Patients receive care supported by data; based on proven studies and methods that have been published in respected medical journals. Additionally, the techniques and approaches used at Northwell Health conform to a standard that all the physicians agree upon. This assures that patient care is personalized based on the best evidence and that the treatment conforms to only the highest standards. 
  • Quality and safety – No other radiation medicine department takes patient safety more seriously than at Northwell Health, where the team has have developed the concept of the ‘No Fly Program.’ Now copied at centers all around the world, the No Fly Policy follows a process map and checklist, similar to a pre-flight checklist in the airline industry that is completed before a patient’s treatment begins. A patient’s treatment will only begin when all the steps that need to be taken have been completed successfully. In terms of quality, the department at Northwell Health has instituted Smart Rounds where all the physicians and physicists meet daily and review every new patient’s treatment plan to make sure there is agreement with the intended course of therapy. This proactive peer review is another way of assuring patients a high level of quality.
  • The patient experience – The staff is committed to provide outstanding and compassionate care and services. They believe this is a key to the healing process and they really do care about each patient’s experience. To demonstrate this commitment to patient satisfaction, the department developed the We C.A.R.E program. Inspired by a therapist who is also a cancer survivor, the program emphasizes the following values.
    • Compassion – The team strives to be always mindful of what patients are experiencing.
    • Accountability – It is their responsibility to provide patients with the best care possible.
    • Respect – They will treat each patient with the courtesy and consideration they deserve.
    • Education – They offer accurate and complete information to help patients make informed choices.

The We C.A.R.E program is designed to improve patient satisfaction and reduce any concerns the patient or their family may have during and after radiation therapy.


The physicians actively offer enrollment for many clinical trials including investigator-initiated and cooperative group studies.
