The Department of Neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) is a part of the Northwell Health Neuroscience Institute, one of the New York metropolitan area’s largest providers of neurosurgical and neurological care. At this base facility, our specialists treat a wide variety of both common disorders and rare diseases, from spinal conditions, brain tumors, cerebrovascular emergencies and traumatic brain injury, to disorders than can be treated with functional neurosurgery, including trigeminal neuralgia, movement disorders, chronic back pain and epilepsy.
North Shore University Hospital is the first hospital on Long Island and one of four in New York state to receive advanced certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC), earning the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark in recognition of its ability to receive and treat the most complex stroke cases. With a 16-bed dedicated neurosurgery ICU staffed 24/7 by neurointensivists, a helipad for the Northwell Health SkyHealth emergency helicopter and the first American College of Surgeons (ACS)-verified level 1 trauma center in the downstate region, our department is prepared to provide the highest quality care with the most advanced treatments.
With a hybrid operating room and 24/7 patient physician assistant coverage, North Shore University Hospital’s Department of Neurosurgery can provide many advanced services and treatments, including:
- Full spectrum of cranial and spinal surgery
- Aneurysm clipping, coiling and stenting
- Mechanical clot extraction
- GammaKnife radiosurgery
- Stereotactic radiosurgery
- Laser ablation (LITT)
- Deep brain stimulation
- Responsive neurostimulation
- Intra-operative MRI (iMRI)
We have in-house CT technicians and MRI technicians on call 24/7. Our specialists have the following diagnostic capabilities, among others:
North Shore University Hospital offers an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-approved neurosurgery residency program to train neurosurgeons of the future. We also offer NCAST and NCC neurosurgery fellowships.
The Northwell Health neurosurgical residency exposes trainees to a rewarding educational experience with a very large and diverse caseload.
Residents rotate through three sites during training:
