Dr. Chong Joins Lenox Hill Hospital
We are pleased to announce that Derek Chong, MD, MSc has accepted the position of Vice Chair of the Department of Neurology and Director of the Epilepsy Program at Lenox Hill Hospital, effective March 10, 2016.
Dr. Chong completed his Hon.B.Sc in neurobiology and a Master's degree in brain and behavior, both at McMaster University in Toronto. He then attended medical school at the University of Calgary and completed his residency in neurology the University of Western Ontario. Both institutions are two of Canada’s largest neurology-neurosurgery combined programs, similar to the model of the integrated neuroscience program at Lenox Hill Hospital.
Post-residency, Dr. Chong completed fellowships at Columbia University Medical Center in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology, specializing in EEG, EMG, evoked potentials, polysomnograms, sleep medicine and clinical and surgical approaches to epilepsy. After fellowship, Dr. Chong remained at Columbia for six years as Assistant Professor of Neurology and served as the Director of Clinical Trials, Outpatient Seizure Clinic and Critical Care EEG monitoring. Dr. Chong then went on to NYU as Assistant Professor of Neurology and Director of the EEG Laboratory in the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.
Dr. Chong is board certified in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology and Sleep Medicine. He has won numerous awards including the Epilepsy Foundation of America’s Post-doctoral Research Training Fellowship for Clinicians and twice has won the Early Career Physician-Scientist award from the American Epilepsy Society & the Milken Family Foundation to fund his research endeavors. Such research has focused on identifying the mechanism of drug-resistance in epilepsy, markers of respiration and gas exchange during seizures, and the role of auto-immunity in epilepsy and brain function.
