The Bohlsen Family Emergency Department (ED) at Southside Hospital provides world class care to the local community. Our specialists treat adults and children for everything from serious medical conditions to minor emergencies. We are seamlessly connected to the full resources of Northwell Health, the largest health system in New York state. Featuring 30,000 square feet of new modern space, our improved ED is now triple in size and provides a simpler, more streamlined process so you or your loved one can receive treatment faster. Our excellent staff can now better accommodate the more than 70,000 patients currently treated by Southside’s emergency and trauma teams each year.

New features

Some new ED features include:

  • 94 spacious treatment rooms with enhanced privacy
  • Four intake rooms for rapid assessment
  • 15 new general treatment rooms
  • Dedicated treatment areas for obstetrics/gynecology patients, bariatric patients and behavioral health patients (and a designated behavioral health ambulance exit)
  • New, modern waiting room for enhanced comfort
  • Additional entrance on the hospital’s south side, off Main Street
  • Helicopter landing pad (only Federal Aviation Administration designated helipad in Suffolk County)

There will be even more new features soon to come, including:

  • An additional 20,000 square feet, for a total of 50,000 square feet (will be capable of handling up to 100,000 emergency visits annually, which should cut waiting times in half.)
  • Five isolation rooms with a decontamination suite (will have its own entrance in a state-of-the-art containment unit)
  • A critical care area with four medical resuscitation units and two trauma rooms, for a total of six beds
  • A new radiological testing area with X-ray and 64-slice, low dose CT (computed tomography) scanning capabilities (This will reduce wait time for CT scans, allowing your physicians to have real-time, definitive information to help guide your treatment plan, and also your follow-up care)
  • A new 16-bed clinical decision/observation unit, with portable/wireless telemetry
  • A specially designed Pediatric Emergency Unit (seamless transfer to Cohen Children’s Medical Center is available for children who require more advanced care)

Rapid triage

Upon entering the ED, you will be helped by our clinical staff within 3-5 minutes and then moved to an intake room for evaluation by a doctor. Subsequent testing and clinical needs determine patient flow in the ED. If suffering from a condition that requires you to be prone (lying down), you will be moved to the main treatment area of the ED.

If you are not required to be prone, you will be moved to our dedicated ambulatory care area (also known as “supertrack”). Some of the common symptoms that we see in the supertrack section are cough, headaches, abdominal pains, dental pain, earaches, pink eye, sore throats, fevers, minor trauma, sprains and bruises.

This “split flow” process ensures efficient treatment if critical patients arrive by ambulance; it has reduced “door to doc” time by 30-40 percent.

Results waiting area

After testing, patients are placed in the results waiting area, which features:

  • Comfortable reclining chairs
  • Electrical ports for personal devices and phones
  • Access to free refreshments
  • Dedicated nursing call bells
  • Staff members who are dedicated to patients’ comfort and satisfaction

Clinical expertise

Heart attack

Southside Hospital is the first and only hospital in the downstate New York region to be recognized for its high-quality care of people with severe heart attacks by the American Heart Association with the Mission: Lifeline Gold award. We earned the distinction by consistently getting patients suffering an ST elevation myocardial infarction (a kind of heart attack) to the hospital’s cardiac catheterization lab, where blood flow can be restored. The national benchmark for door-to-artery unblockage time is 90 minutes, but Southside

Hospital’s average time is 30 percent faster at 60 minutes. We offer some of the fastest emergency interventional cardiac care in the nation—because every second counts.

We also use advanced technology that allows emergency medical services (EMS) workers to communicate a heart attack patient’s condition quickly to our physicians before your arrive at the ED, so they can start preparing.

In some heart attack cases, cardiac catheterization is needed, which is done in a special lab room. We are continuing to enhance our cardiac care by building a new cardiac catheterization lab (needed in some heart attack cases) and a new EP (electrophysiology) lab, which evaluates abnormal heart rhythms. This will bring us to a total of three cardiac catheterization labs and two EP labs. In addition we recently opened a brand-new 17-bed cardiac recovery room so patients can enjoy enhanced comfort and privacy after their procedure.

Receiving expert treatment for strokes can mean the difference between life and death. We see all stroke patients in the ED in a timely manner to ensure their needs are addressed and care is received accordingly. As a designated Stroke Center, we offer the most advanced training, personnel and equipment to provide state-of-the-art care to patients suffering from ischemic strokes (the most common type) and hemorrhagic strokes.

Telestroke neurologists are available to examine patients when a stroke-certified neurologist is not available in the ED, or if the patient is not in the ED. A computer screen and video camera allows neurologists to evaluate you remotely. This evaluation helps the doctor know if you are able to receive “clot-busting” drugs or other ways to treat your stroke. The faster you have your stroke treated, the more likely you are to lower stroke-related disability.

Critical care/trauma

We were the first American College of Surgeons (ACS) Level II verified trauma center on Long Island and in New York state. This achievement recognizes our commitment to providing high-quality service, excellence and optimal care for all patients. Our ED physicians may call upon specialists including neurosurgeons, pulmonologists, intensivists, trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists and orthopaedists 24 hours a day to provide immediate state-of-the-art care to all trauma patients. We also have an in-house lab, advanced life support immediately available on air and 911 and long-distance transport.

Neonatal critical care

Our hospital has a designated level II neonatal critical care center by the American Academy of Pediatrics for our ability to provide advanced critical care to infants who are ill or injured.
