What is obesity?

Whether or not you are considered obese is determined by your body mass index (BMI). BMI is a number calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters. The easiest way to learn your BMI is to check a BMI chart that has already done the calculations for your height and weight in pounds and inches.

Those with a BMI of 30 to 39 are classified as obese. Those with a BMI of 40 or more are classified as morbidly obese. However, someone with a BMI from 35 to 39 who has a weight-related medical condition is also classified as morbidly obese.

People in the morbidly obese range generally are at least 100 pounds overweight. This extra weight puts them at risk of developing or worsening conditions like:

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Degenerative joint disease
  • Certain cancers

Ultimately, they are at higher risk of early death from all causes.

Fortunately, weight loss can reduce the severity of many weight-related conditions and, in some cases, even eliminate them completely. This has been associated with longer life expectancy.

Diet and exercise regimens are still the first and best treatments for obesity. They can be supplemented with behavioral therapy and several medicines to aid in weight loss. But, if you’ve tried and been unable to lose weight that way, or if you’ve lost weight only to regain it, you may be a candidate for bariatric surgery.

We’re here to discuss your options. Let’s talk about the best way for you to lose weight.
