About

About

To be able to cure others, and help them get back to their families and their lives that is extremely rewarding.

Darren Rohan, MD, FACS is the Westchester regional director of the Thoracic Surgery Program, treating patients at Lenox Hill Hospital, Northern Westchester Hospital and Phelps Hospital. He is a highly skilled leader in robotic thoracic surgery, with specialized expertise in robotic and minimally invasive thoracic procedures for lung surgery, hiatal hernias, severe gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophageal cancer and mediastinal masses.

At the forefront of innovation in robotic technology, Dr. Rohan has pioneered many groundbreaking accomplishments. He was the first thoracic surgeon in the country to use the da Vinci Xi robot for chest surgery, a robotic surgical system that allows for smaller incisions, enhanced flexibility and pinpoint precision. He is also the first in the nation to perform a lung lobectomy with the da Vinci Xi system, as well as nissen fundoplication a procedure that relieves severe acid reflux disease.

I am committed to providing the latest, most effective surgical options for my patients, Dr. Rohan says. Minimally invasive techniques, like robotic surgery, reduce pain and scarring, and help patients recover quicker than traditional open surgery.

Dr. Rohan is part of the robotic surgery leadership team that guided Northern Westchester Hospital to receive recognition as a Center of Excellence for Robotic Surgery. He also received recognition himself as a Surgeon of Excellence in Robotic Surgery, and started the robotic surgery program at Phelps Hospital.

Fully committed to being accessible for his patients, Dr. Rohan is always there to answer questions and address any concerns. He even shares his personal cell phone number so he can be reached after office hours. Most people who require my services are usually undergoing a life-changing medical event, he says. My patients know they have my full support whenever they need it. Dr. Rohan s willingness to help people began at a very young age. My grandfather died of colon cancer and that drove me into this line of work, he says. To be able to cure others, and help them get back to their families and their lives that is extremely rewarding.

Working closely with a multidisciplinary team at Northern Westchester and Phelps hospitals, Dr. Rohan identifies patients with lung cancer who might benefit from clinical trials. He is also working to develop new techniques and treatments for reflux disease. Dr. Rohan serves as assistant professor of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He is a member of various prestigious medical societies, including the Society of Thoracic Surgery, the New York Medical Society and the American College of Surgeons.
