Overview

While there is much diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community, what unifies each individual is the common experience of stigma and discrimination. At Northwell, we strive to break down barriers and offer individualized, compassionate health care to each and every person.

The more we know about you, the better we can serve you and promote your personal health and wellness. We encourage you to share information about your sexual orientation, gender identity and sexual health with the care team so that we may provide you with world-class medical care that meets your specific needs. All patient information is confidential.

Education & awareness

Our office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy is working to increase knowledge and education around the healthcare needs of the LGBTQIA+ community throughout our 23 hospitals and 750 outpatient practices. This education—largely through our Center for Learning and Innovation—is designed to exemplify our commitment to the specific needs of all our patients. A wide range of courses and educational resources, such as our Expressions BERG (Business Employee Resource Groups) program, provide our employees with tools that foster cultural humility, critical thinking and self-awareness. It promotes a fair, high-performing and inclusive work environment. And that means better care for every single patient we treat.

Community partnerships

Northwell Health has partnerships with LGBTQIA+ organizations near each of our hospitals, which allow us to work closely with the metro New York and Long Island LGBTQIA+ communities. We are able to connect those in the LGBTQIA+ community with healthcare providers and additional resources that they need to live their healthiest lives.

Lenox Hill Greenwich Village (LHGV)—a division of Lenox Hill Hospital—is a state-of-the-art nyc emergency clinic and is among the facilities that work closely with the LGBTQIA+ community. LHGV's relationship with the nearby LGBTQIA+ Community Center is an example of how our partnerships truly benefit our LGBTQIA+ patients' specific needs.

Patient Bill of Rights

Every patient has the right to receive treatment without discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, gender identity, gender expression or disability, in addition to other important rights. Learn more about your rights as a patient here.
