North Shore Radiation Therapy is located just steps away from Northwell Health's hematology/medical oncology services, cancer surgery subspecialties and diagnostic imaging services, so you can receive all the cancer services you need in one convenient location.
Our Greenlawn location has a long history of innovations in brachytherapy, a procedure in which radioactive materials are placed in or around cancers to kill the tumor cells. We use brachytherapy to treat several different diseases, including:
- Skin cancer—Many patients with basal cell or squamous cell skin cancers can be treated surgically with excellent results. But for some patients, high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a pain-free, noninvasive and effective alternative to surgery. We were the first practice in our area to pioneer skin brachytherapy and have treated hundreds of patients with the procedure over the past decade.
Unlike Moh’s surgery, there is no scarring or need for reconstructive surgery after HDR brachytherapy, and patients experience excellent outcomes that are equivalent to surgery. In comparison to a course of standard radiation therapy, HDR brachytherapy is considerably shorter (eight to 10 treatments, versus 30 treatments) with less radiation delivered to a patient’s deeper, healthy tissues. Each HDR treatment lasts just 15 to 20 minutes.
- Cervical and endometrial cancers—With HDR brachytherapy for cervical and endometrial cancers, the radiation source is placed in a device in the vagina (and sometimes in the cervix). The procedure is done as an outpatient over several treatments. For each high-dose treatment, the radioactive material is inserted for a few minutes and then removed. The advantage of HDR treatment is that you do not have to stay in the hospital or stay still for long periods of time.
External radiation therapy services available at North Shore Radiation Therapy include:
- 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT)—Combines multiple radiation treatment fields to deliver precise doses of radiation. It sends a high dose of radiation to tumors but attempts to avoid healthy tissue. We perform 3D-CRT using our Varian RapidArc® Radiotherapy Technology.
- Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)—IMRT differs from 3D-CRT by modifying the intensity of the radiation within each of the radiation beams and allows delivery of higher doses of radiation to tumors, especially those near vital areas, while lowering doses to nearby healthy tissue. We perform IMRT using our Varian RapidArc® Radiotherapy Technology.
- Rapid arc radiation therapy—Radiotherapy technology that provides a treatment in two minutes or less by delivering a dose in a single arc around the patient. This allows us to target the entire tumor while sparing normal, healthy tissue. We perform rapid arc radiation therapy using our Varian RapidArc® Radiotherapy Technology.
- Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)—Uses X-ray imaging during treatments to locate and focus radiation beams more precisely on tumors. IGRT enables doctors to make real-time adaptations to the treatment plan.
- 4-dimensional simulation—Used for simulation of respiratory gating procedures to monitor the tumor’s movement as the patient breathes. This allows treatment with a high dose of radiation to cancerous tumors while sparing a larger volume of healthy tissue. We perform 4D simulation using our Varian Real-Time Position Management™ (RPM) System, GE Advantage 4D.
