We're here for all of life's hardest moments
Whether you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, a mood disorder or the first signs of psychosis, our compassionate behavioral health experts are here to help.

Mental health and addictive disorders are not only among the most common illnesses in any community, they can also have the severest impact on functioning and quality of life. People in need of behavioral health services represent every group you can possibly imagine—they’re our families and friends, our colleagues and neighbors.

Northwell Health Behavioral Health Services strives to address the diverse mental health needs of the communities we serve by providing a continuum of high-quality psychological services and behavioral health resources. These include emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services for people of all ages suffering from a variety of psychiatric disorders, as well as addictive disorders. We offer optimal access to behavioral health treatment and wellness services for the entire region. And we continue to strengthen our commitment to education and training in psychiatry and its related disciplines while expanding knowledge in the behavioral health sciences through clinical research.

Recognizing that behavioral health is a concern at every stage of life, we focus on issues impacting all age groups, from children and adolescents right up through the growing geriatric population. We partner with patients and families as we build for tomorrow’s community behavioral health needs.

Working collaboratively across the healthcare system, we aim to continually identify and create optimal treatment environments and options, providing the necessary mental health services that keep our communities healthy and improve lives.

Why choose us?

At Northwell Health, we provide an array of behavioral health services throughout our network, including inpatient and outpatient treatment for a diverse community of all ages. We are also dedicated to expanding knowledge in the behavioral sciences through intensive clinical research.

Education and training is offered in psychiatry and related disciplines through highly regarded postdoctoral training programs, including fellowships, internships and externships in behavioral health.

Patients choose Northwell's behavioral health services for:

Two dedicated hospitals

Northwell Health includes two hospitals that specialize in behavioral health. The Zucker Hillside Hospital is a 236-bed facility in Glen Oaks, NY, which was recognized by U.S. News and World Report for its work in the diagnosis, treatment and research of mental illness. South Oaks Hospital, a 246-bed behavioral facility in Amityville, NY, provides treatment and recovery programs for patients with acute psychiatric illness and addiction.

Comprehensive options for treating addiction

We offer a variety of addiction treatment options, including hospital-based rehabilitation and detoxification programs and outpatient clinics in centers on Staten Island and Long Island. We are also studying the latest innovations in addiction treatment as a member of the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network.

Applied behavioral consultation services for students and families

We offer schools, students and families programs that are geared toward promoting positive changes in behavior, as well as academic and social development. These include workshops and classes for families and educational professionals as well as for individuals, classrooms and even entire schools. Services can be flexible, short term or on a continuous basis.

Specialized programs for military veterans

We recently received a $300,000 matching grant to open a behavioral health center for veterans of the military and their families in Bay Shore, NY. With some 150,000 veterans living on Long Island, the center will focus on those returning from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as their families and children.
