We Change Kids' Lives for the Better

Cohen Children’s is always moving forward, striving to improve care for both patients and their families.

Dear Friends,

Welcome back to another edition of Kids First. We trust everyone had a healthy and enjoyable summer and a great start to the new school year.

As you read the following pages, you will be reminded of the belief everyone shares in this hospital: There is no better place in the area to bring a child than Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

Our continued dedication to caring for children and improving on our past successes can be seen in the most recent US News and World Report rankings, which in June placed Cohen Children’s Medical Center among the top 50 in the country in nine of 10 categories. And, our urology department was in the top 10 nationwide.

For nine straight years, we have been ranked among the best, but instead of resting on our laurels, we are always moving forward, striving to improve care for both patients and their families.

Also in June, we were named “Children’s Hospital of the Month” by Children’s Hospitals Solutions for Patient Safety in recognition of our efforts to improve the quality of care provided to children.

Our cover story is a fascinating article about an innovative surgery for a baby who was born with no thumb. Surgeons were able to reconstruct a thumb from the baby’s index finger.

Also inside we take a look at the refurbished Ronald McDonald House that allows parents and families to stay nearby while children are being treated and a report on our new, dedicated MRI suite that allows children to be tested at Cohen Children’s instead of having to take them next door to LIJ Medical Center.

And because caring for children goes far beyond hospital stays, we focus on children’s heart health and some tips for heading off heart disease at a young age.

We also take a look at our unique pediatric pharmacy and the ways donors help the hospital, with both large and small contributions that help us maintain the extraordinary level of care we offer.

Enjoy the magazine and have a safe and healthy fall.
