We Change Kids' Lives for the Better

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the latest edition of Kids First. We hope everyone had a successful and healthy school year and is looking forward to a fun summer.

As you read this issue, you’ll see the highlights of our efforts to build on our stature as the best children’s hospital in the region. Each page drives home the point that there is no better place in the area to bring a child than Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

Inside you will find stories that celebrate patients’ successes, such as the tale of a young dancer who was slowed by cardiac symptoms but is now back on the dance floor, and a young girl whose spine is being straightened thanks to a new procedure that reduces the need for multiple surgeries, the first use of the technique on Long Island.

We also learn about a patient whose mom diligently researched her son’s neurological condition and found a neurosurgeon at Cohen Children’s who corrected a problem that vexed other doctors. Most of her son’s debilitating symptoms are gone, and he looks forward to returning to school.

A goal of any pediatric hospital is to set children on the path to healthy living. To that end, we feature our POWER Kids program, which helps kids make healthy food choices.

Readers will also learn about unique ways that Cohen Children’s helps to ease a child’s hospital stay, such as visits from Bailey the therapy dog, who comforts and entertains patients (and parents). Kids also enjoyed visits from the New York Islanders and Miss America.

As you turn the pages, you will also read about innovations at Cohen Children’s, such as the new fast-track system, designed to move patients quickly through the Emergency Department, and the help we get from our donors, such as the courtesy shuttle service donated by longtime benefactors Billie and George Ross.

Enjoy the magazine and have a great, safe and healthy summer.
