Nonsurgical Heart Valve Procedure is a First for Long Island

The cardiac team at LIJ Medical Center is the first in Queens and Long Island to implant the first FDA-approved nonsurgical heart valve replacement device to treat severe aortic stenosis, a condition in which calcium builds up on the aortic valve, restricting blood flow. The condition makes walking and breathing difficult. For many older patients with complex medical problems, open heart surgery is too risky. The Sapien transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR, now offers a treatment option to those who were previously inoperable, giving hope for extending the lives of patients with improved quality of life.
