Listeria Contamination Is Most Concerning for Certain Groups

The recent listeria contamination of caramel apples, soybean sprouts and mungbean sprouts is particularly concerning for the young, elderly, pregnant and immune-compromised, a New York emergency medicine physician says. Listeria is a bacterial illness coming from contaminated food; the infection typically has vague symptoms of muscle ache, headache and fever, says Joseph Garber, MD, director of emergency medicine at Syosset Hospital. Symptoms usually occur within several days of eating the contaminated product. Treatment of listeria is typically with antibiotics such as penicillin.
