Fire Challenge Danger

The Fire Challenge has been a hot button topic of conversation in recent news. Popularized on Social Media the “game” involves coating your abdomen or chest with an accelerant like rubbing alcohol and lighting it on fire, landing a number of teens in the hospital, and one dead in NY. Though the point of the challenge isn’t clear, the potentially injuries are, “This is one of the most dangerous things anyone can do,” said Dr. Michael Cooper, director of the Jerome L. Finkelstein Regional Burn Center at Staten Island University hospital. Dr. Cooper says the real challenge is not the game, but the recovery from the burn, “Flame burns are the deepest burns one can sustain. You’re facing months of hospitalization involving surgery and painful removal of burnt skin, with possible grafting, followed by months physical rehabilitation and life-changing physical and mental scars.”
