PLAINVIEW, NY -- When Sergeant John Riffle returned home from Afghanistan, he was welcomed by hundreds of yellow ribbons that lined the streets in his neighborhood. The Yellow Ribbon Campaign efforts were lead by Kelly Soel, RN, a North Shore-LIJ community health nurse, Gina Ryan of Zucker Hillside Hospital, and John’s wife, Stephanie Sanchez-Riffle of North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.
While overseas, Stephanie reached out to the Rosen Family Wellness Center for Law Enforcement and Military personnel to help her husband’s unit receive toiletries and other personal items not readily available to them. The collection was organized through Plainview’s Seniors for Soldiers Veterans group. Multiple boxes were shipped to Operation Freedom in Afghanistan. To express his gratitude, John attended the Seniors for Soldiers holiday party at the Mid Island YJCC and presented the members with a flag that was flown over Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. John was happy to discuss his service and experiences in Afghanistan. He spent time engaging in conversation and answering questions posed by the senior veterans.
