Taking Diabetes Education to the People

MANHASSET, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System is offering diabetes education and wellness programs at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.

The programs are geared toward people with diabetes; the workshops are also open to family members who want to learn more about diabetes and helping their loved one cope with the disease.

“Diabetes affects the whole family and it’s important to incorporate everyone in the conversation,” said Marie Frazzitta, DNP, director of diabetes education for the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “Living with diabetes affects all aspects of a person’s life including what they can eat and how they exercise.”

The diabetes education programs will discuss areas such as healthy eating, physical activity, medications, monitoring glucose levels and managing the disease. The program is certified by the American Association of

Diabetes Educators and all classes are taught by a certified diabetes educator, which is a health professional who has received training to help those living with diabetes.

The diabetes education program will take place on Thursdays throughout the year from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Tower Conference Room at North Shore University Hospital , 300 Community Drive. The dates for the program are: January 17, 24, 31; February 14; March 7, 14, 21, 28; April 4; May 23, 30; June 6, 13, 20, 27; September 12, 19, 26; October 3, 10, 17; November 7, 14, 28; December 5, 12.

The health system’s diabetes wellness program will collaborate with area medical providers to provide diabetes education services that practices often can’t provide onsite or don’t have the staff to maintain. North Shore-LIJ’s community diabetes services are being expanded to other health system facilities throughout the region, including urgent care centers and some physician practices.

“These outreach efforts will help increase the quality of care that is given to people living with diabetes and their families,” Dr. Frazzitta said. “It also ultimately helps to drive down healthcare costs as people become more educated and aware of what steps they need to take care of themselves thereby helping to reduce the risk of hospitalizations and emergency room visits.”
