Surgical Success

Health Commissioner Dr. Nirav Shah is the keynote speaker at today's inaugural annual meeting for Lenox Hill's New York Head & Neck Institute. He will discuss the ACA's impact on subspecialty-care access. The event is a showcase for the NYHNI, which Dr. Peter Costantino brought to North Shore-LIJ in late 2010 when he was recruited from St. Luke's-Roosevelt. Dr. Costantino is now executive director and senior vice president of the Head & Neck Surgery Service Line for the NS-LIJ system. The NYHNI had two staff members in January 2011, but today has some 100 part-time, full-time or voluntary doctors. Since Dr. Costantino's arrival, there has been a nearly 100% growth in surgical volume at Lenox Hill and 25% growth at MEETH. The volume of Lenox Hill's inpatient and outpatient otolaryngology surgical cases went from 780 in 2010 to a projected 1,509 this year. MEETH's outpatient otolaryngology surgical cases rose to a projected 3,224 in 2013 from 2,688 in 2010. And the marketing staffers at NS-LIJ are touting this ranking: Lenox Hill and MEETH made it onto US News & World Report's list of best ENT programs in the country for the first time.
