Staten Island University Hospital receives the Commission on Cancer’s Outstanding Achievement Award

Staten Island, NY – The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has granted its Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) to Staten Island University Hospital.

Established in 2004, the CoC’s Outstanding Achievement Award recognized 106 cancer programs this year that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. The award is granted to facilities that demonstrate a Commendation level of compliance in six areas of cancer program activity: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical management, research, community outreach, and quality improvement.

“As the primary deliverer of cancer care in our community, we are happy to service our patients. None of the staff seeks out praise for what they do, but it is always nice to be singled out by a national organization as a center of excellence,” said Dr. Frank Forte, program director of Oncology/Hematology/Palliative Care at SIUH. “Thank you to the entire professional, administrative and support staff for a job well done.”

During an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor, compliance is determined with seven set standards.

Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving patient outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care.

Cancer Services at Staten Island University Hospital is located at the Hospital’s north campus, and offers advanced treatments such as: radiosurgery, radiation seed therapy for prostate cancers (brachytherapy); as well as many treatments for breast cancer.
