Southside, Staten Island University Hospitals Rank Among Joint Commission “Top Performers”

GREAT NECK, NY – Southside Hospital in Bay Shore and Staten Island University Hospital were among 620 hospitals nationwide and 16 in New York State that were ranked among top national performers based on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the nation's leading healthcare accreditation organization.

This is the second consecutive year that Southside Hospital has achieved this national recognition, one of only 244 hospitals to achieve this distinction during the two years that The Joint Commission has recognized top performers.

As two of only 620 hospitals to receive this ranking, Southside and Staten Island are among the top 18 percent of the more than 3,400 Joint Commission-accredited hospitals that reported data in 2011. Both Southside and Staten Island University hospitals were rated as top performers in these areas: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.

To achieve top-performer distinction, a hospital needed to receive a 95 percent or above on its composite score in its accountability measures that were reported to The Joint Commission in 2011. Also, the hospital had to reach a 95 percent or above in each individual accountability measure that it reports to The Joint Commission. The accountability measures that were reviewed are representative of evidence-based practices, such as giving a patient antibiotics one hour prior to his or her surgery.

“When we raise the bar and provide the proper guidance and tools, hospitals have responded with excellent results,” said Joint Commission President Mark Chassin, MD. “This capacity for continual improvement points toward a future in which quality and safety defects are dramatically reduced and high reliability is sought and achieved with regularity. Such day-to-day progress will slowly but surely transform today’s health care system into one that achieves unprecedented performance outcomes for the benefit of the patients.”

“The safety and care of our patients is our top priority at the North Shore-LIJ Health System,” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer at North Shore-LIJ. “To achieve the highest standards possible, we have made a commitment to achieving the best patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes. I applaud the clinical teams at Southside Hospital and Staten Island University Hospital for distinguishing themselves nationally for their performance.”

The designation was announced today in The Joint Commission’s “Improving America’s Hospitals” annual report. For more information, go to The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website
