Southside Building Bohlsen Family ED
Southside Hospital has begun a multi-million dollar expansion of its emergency department that will be known as the Bohlsen Family Emergency Department following a donation of an undisclosed amount.
The 321-bed hospital in Bay Shore, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, expects to complete the first phase of the 30,000-square-foot building by next summer.
The facility by Cannon Design is nearly three times the size of the existing, 11,000-square-foot emergency department.
It will be able to accommodate more than 70,000 visits annually with the help of 60 treatment spaces, radiology suites and a rapid access area for patients with less severe conditions.
Southside Hospital Executive Director Donna Moravick said the facility will let the hospital “improve its level of service and efficiency.”
Dr. John D’Angelo, the system’s senior vice president of emergency medicine, said the new facility “breaks away from traditional design.”
The second phase includes a pediatric emergency department and the third includes a clinical decision unit with a diagnostic and treatment area for patients requiring longer evaluations up to 48 hours.
