Southside to Build New ICU

North Shore-LIJ’s Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, L.I., has proposed a new, $13 million, 10-bed intensive care unit to handle an expected increased demand for critical-care beds that will result from its emergency room expansion. The hospital will house the unit in an 8,849-square-foot space currently used for storage and mechanical systems. The project is necessary because “the current ICU bed complement is stressed and the expansion of the emergency department will further tax the already less than optimal resources of our current ICU,” Southside wrote in its certificate-of-need application. The new ICU will support a $38 million plan to triple the size of the hospital’s emergency department, which is expected to be completed by August 2016. Southside has about 72,000 ED visits annually, and is increasingly taking on more complex cases, said Donna Moravick, executive director of the hospital.  “This was built as a community hospital, so as we have been transitioning to a tertiary facility, I look at this as giving us the ability to have higher acuity patients,” she said. Southside is North Shore-LIJ’s lone tertiary hospital in Suffolk County, a role that takes on more importance with the acquisition of Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.
