NEW YORK, NY – S. Jacob Scheinerman, MD, a renowned leader in cardiothoracic surgery, has been appointed chair of cardiothoracic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital. He previously served as vice chair of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in Queens, where he also served as chair of the hospital’s medical board.
As chair, Dr. Scheinerman will lead and build upon the tradition of surgical excellence set by Lenox Hill Hospital’s nationally recognized cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons, who have been instrumental in continually placing Lenox Hill among the nation’s top 50 hospitals in cardiology and heart surgery in US News and World Report’s annual best hospitals editions.
While at LIJ, he directed several clinical trials for high-risk and cutting-edge procedures. Under Dr. Scheinerman’s leadership, LIJ achieved New York State’s best outcomes for patients undergoing surgeries to repair or replace heart valves and for those in need of surgeries for both valve and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, according to the state Department of Health’s most recent report on open-heart surgery outcomes. In that same report, Dr. Scheinerman was one of 11 surgeons statewide to distinguish themselves for their extraordinarily low mortality rates -- out of a total of more than 180 surgeons who performed open-heart surgeries during the reporting period.
Prior to joining North Shore-LIJ, Dr. Scheinerman was a practicing physician at St. Francis Medical Center in Hartford, CT as well as a physician consultant for the Rehab Hospital of Connecticut.
He will continue to serve as associate professor of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. He previously served as a board member of the American Heart Association and the National Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He has contributed to many clinical publications and presentations around the advancement of cardiac and thoracic surgery.
Dr. Scheinerman received his medical degree from New York University (NYU) School of Medicine in New York. He completed both his residency and fellowships at NYU Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital for both general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery.
