New York, NY – Rafael Ortiz, MD, director of Neuro-Endovascular Surgery/ Interventional Neuroradiology and Stroke at Lenox Hill Hospital (LHH), part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, was the guest speaker at the Platform Summit 2015 held Oct. 2 – Oct. 4, at the Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA.
Platform is a non-profit organization with the mission to increase the interest, participation, and success of those underrepresented in the innovation economy — with a particular focus on African-Americans, Latinos and women.
Now in its third year, the main focus of the summit was to gather nationally known leaders in the field of technology and healthcare and discuss how those in underrepresented groups can overcome the challenges they face in the workforce. Some of the topics included how to succeed in a technology driven world; how to overcome economic disparity and obtain access to capital for entrepreneurial innovations; the role of robotic technology and how it will impact the workforce in the future; and, how technology plays an important role in the healthcare industry.
At the summit, Dr. Ortiz, a nationally renowned endovascular surgeon, spoke about “Innovation in Healthcare” and its growing importance in helping patients achieve optimal health for a variety of conditions.
“Platform Summit 2015 was an exciting event in which people from different industries shared ideas of innovation in technology,” said Dr. Ortiz. “More importantly, it was inspiring to meet people who are culturally diverse and are role models for future generations. I am already looking forward to next year’s Summit.”
Dr. Ortiz, especially well-regarded in the Latino community, spearheaded the development of LHH’s Endovascular Neurosurgery and Interventional Neuroradiology program. The hospital’s team has specialized expertise in the treatment of complex brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVM’s), stroke and cerebral bypass surgery.
