Huntington Hospital’s Clark Gillies pediatric emergency department added to its kid-friendly design thanks to murals donated by Splashes of Hope and the Claire Friedlander Foundation.
The murals, which feature peaceful seascapes, hot air balloons and butterflies, were made possible by the Claire Friedlander Foundation and created by the non-profit Splashes of Hope.
The isolation room mural, for example, features several different animals and items that have been incorporated into an interactive game of “I Spy” for young patients to help make the experience of being in the emergency department more enjoyable.
“Having these bright, beautiful paintings on the wall have done a great deal to alleviate some of the anxiety and fears a child has when in the emergency department and allows them to just be children,” said Michael Recupero, RN, director of patient care services at Huntington Hospital. “We really appreciate Splashes of Hope and the Claire Friedlander Foundation for making these murals possible.”
In addition to this work in the Huntington Hospital pediatric emergency department, Splashes of Hope has created ceiling tiles depicting the Huntington lighthouse and the Amalfi Coast of Italy for Huntington Hospital’s Don Monti Cancer Center; two mural panels with characters and local Huntington scenes in the pediatric unit; ceiling tiles of beach scenes for the intensive care unit (ICU); and a mural with animal characters and local Huntington scenes in the previous pediatric emergency department waiting room. These pieces were sponsored by Legislator William Spencer, MD; the Huntington Rotary Club; the NPD Group; Motorola and some private donors.
Splashes of Hope is working on a mural for the Huntington Hospital Don Monti Cancer Center.
