Southside Hospital joins national collaborative to help children with asthma

Southside Hospital is participating in a national improvement collaborative for children with asthma through the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). As part of the initiative, health care providers are being given tools to help select and provide the appropriate medications and tests as well as effectively counsel families.

Nearly10 percent of children in the United States have asthma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Asthma is the leading cause of pediatric emergency visits and hospitalizations. Southside’s pediatric asthma patients will benefit from the AAP collaborative by gaining access to resources typically only available at large academic children’s hospitals. Southside is one of 89 hospitals across the nation taking part.

“Physicians typically face tremendous barriers to consistently practicing evidence-based care with pediatric asthma patients,” said Alia Chauhan, MD, associate director of pediatric hospital medicine at Southside. “This unfortunately leads to varying rates of admissions and treatments in patients. But through this collaborative, we will have access to best practices and resources that will help our children with asthma consistently receive the best care possible.”

Southside’s new pediatric unit, which features  private rooms complete with sleeper couches for guardians to remain with their children, debuted at the end of last year. Southside also has a strong partnership with pediatric specialty hospital Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park.
