Students at Central Islip High School got a close look at a variety of health care careers by interacting with Southside Hospital and Northwell Health employees during the school’s medical career day on May 12.
About 60 Northwell Health employees from 30 different career paths ranging from health educator to real estate services professional were available throughout the school day in the gym to answer students’ questions about their jobs. There were also interactive learning opportunities such as hands only CPR and automated external defibrillator training.
This was in addition to a dozen employees who gave presentations about their specialty area. Tim Dackow, RN, coordinator of Southside Hospital’s trauma injury prevention and emergency medical services outreach, was one of those speakers.
“I talked to the students about the importance of CPR; avoiding distracted driving and texting while driving; and early bleeding control in case a friend or their teacher needs help,” Mr. Dackow said.
Mr. Dackow does a similar program for local first responders and is interested in bringing this important information to Long Island schools. To bring the bleeding control program to your school or organization, contact Mr. Dackow at 631-894-5204.
Northwell Health is now offering medical career days in five school districts. If you are interested in having this brought to your school district, contact Matthew DePace, manager of community relations at Northwell Health, at 631-396-6710.
