Two Central Islip residents and the first responders and medical personnel who saved them were recognized at an event organized by Southside Hospital on October 25 at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore.
Andrew Felber suffered serious injuries in a car accident, including 24 broken ribs. Ana Portillo, involved in a separate car accident, was left with severe internal injuries and two broken legs. Each of the 100 people who helped to save these two patients’ lives, from the Central Islip-Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance EMS provider to Central Islip Fire Department first responders and the Southside Hospital trauma team and staff from other departments were honored for their heroics.
“I can’t thank Southside Hospital enough because next month I will turn 88 and they’re the reason I’m still here,” Mr. Felber said.
Michael Grossman, MD, chief of Southside’s trauma program, said of the evening, “It’s very inspiring to see such a large number of people come together with a singular goal – to save a patient’s life. We appreciate all of our community first responders for their speed and skill in caring for patients in the field. With our first responders, we at Southside Hospital are a great team caring for our community.”
