Southside Hospital adds staffer to support patients during cancer treatment

Southside Hospital has hired Lana Emerick, RN, to help guide patients through the complexities of the health care system as they are getting cancer treatments.

Cancer patient navigators aid patients in a variety of ways, including being a bridge between the patients’ doctors; providing emotional support; interacting with families and supporting them through difficult decisions; making medical appointments and ensuring that patients comply with their care recommendations to support the best possible clinical outcomes.

“From being an emotional support to organizing a person’s appointments to helping them get the kind of care their oncologists are recommending, Lana will be a great asset to our patients,” said Patricia Farrell, RN, chief nursing officer at Southside Hospital.

Ms. Emerick was previously an oncology nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan.

Southside Hospital is less than a mile from the Imbert Cancer Center, a $46.5 million, 46,000-square-foot comprehensive cancer care and imaging facility.

Northwell Health has cancer navigators available to patients at seven hospitals as well as the Monter Cancer Center and Imbert Cancer Center.
