The Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) is the only New York metropolitan area hospital to earn an overall three-stars designation – the highest possible rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) – in three cardiac surgery categories: isolated coronary artery grafting bypass (CABG), isolated aortic valve replacement (AVR), and combined AVR and CABG surgery. Data analysis about cardiac programs nationwide was recently posted by the STS.
Based on the STS’s stringent review, NSUH’s Heart Hospital was one of only 14 hospitals in the United States and Canada to receive the overall three-star quality rating for outcomes and patient care in all three cateogories, placing it among an elite 1.4 percent of hospitals. The STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Report analyzed data from 1,017 voluntary participants between January 2014 and December 2016.
“It’s a highly prestigious honor to be recognized by the STS for the highest quality and excellence in all three cardiac surgery categories,” said Alan Hartman, MD, senior vice president and executive director of cardiothoracic services at Northwell Health. “The superior ratings, which are difficult to attain, takes relentless attention to detail, hard work and the collaboration of our expert cardiac surgery team and health care professionals.”
The star system is one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded overall measures of quality in health care, rating the benchmarked outcomes of cardiothoracic programs in the US and Canada, according to the STS. The rating is calculated using a combination of quality measures for specific procedures performed by an STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database participant.
The STS’s Adult Cardiac Surgery Star Rating summary, covering data analysis for the time period ending December 31, 2016, is available to the public on the society’s website: http://publicreporting.sts.org/acsd
