Following the final phase of construction, a ribbon-cutting ceremony dedicating Staten Island University Hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Center to the memory of the late Florina Rusi Marke is scheduled for February 2 at 4 p.m. at 456B Mason Avenue at SIUH’s North Campus.
The event showcases the center’s extensive services for breast health and breast cancer care while unveiling the new suite of holistic and boutique amenities that create a comfort zone for women and men undergoing chemo- and radiation therapies and those recovering from lumpectomy, mastectomy and breast reconstruction.
Realizing the vision of the center’s director, breast surgeon Cynara Coomer, MD, who founded the center in 2009, and the ongoing philanthropic support of the Rusi Marke family, the completed final phase brings to life an aesthetic environment for holistic programs supporting patients in maximizing their health through massage therapy, reiki, yoga, meditation and more.
Enter the Personal Touch Boutique, where female consultants certified in mastectomy care warmly welcome an often frightened woman coming in for a first mastectomy bra or swimsuit fitting following surgery. A woman’s self-esteem often hinges on the experience, but there are also considerations for the safety and comfort of post-surgical wear. The therapeutic warmth of the Personal Touch Boutique and its consultants extends to patients selecting wigs.
Under Dr. Coomer’s guidance the Comprehensive Breast Center takes an approach to care that utilizes recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer including a multispecialty team approach to managing the patient’s care, advanced imaging capabilities, radiation oncology modalities, genetic counseling, a nurse navigator program, and the innovative surgical techniques of hidden-scar mastectomy, microsurgery and reconstruction.
