Mark Smith, MD, has been named system vice-chair of surgery for Northwell Health and director of strategic initiatives in the western region for the surgical service line. He has also been appointed director of oncologic reconstruction at Northwell’s Cancer Institute.
Dr. Smith comes to Northwell from Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center where he served as chief of the division of plastic surgery and was professor of surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Smith was also director of the Friedman Center for Lymphedema Research and Treatment and director of plastic surgery for Continuum Cancer Centers of New York, a multi-hospital network that included Beth Israel, St-Luke’s and Roosevelt Medical Centers, as well as New York Eye and Ear infirmary.
An internationally recognized expert in microsurgical reconstruction, Dr. Smith’s career has focused on treating patients with complex reconstructive issues due to cancer, trauma and birth defects. He has made pioneering contributions in the area of breast reconstruction, lymphatic surgery and facial reanimation, including performing the first deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstructions in New York City; publishing one of the first case studies in the U.S. using oncoplastic techniques for breast conservation in patients with breast cancer; and being one of the first surgeons in North America to successfully perform lymph node transfers to the wrist and calf to treat cancer-related lymphedema.
“Dr. Smith’s arrival at Northwell Health is a critical step as the surgical service line coordinates efforts between plastic surgery, cancer services and surgical oncology to provide world-class care, particularly to patients with cancer and its consequences,” said Dr. Gene Coppa, MD, senior vice president and executive director for surgical services at Northwell Health.
Along with his duties at Northwell’s Cancer Institute and in the Department of Surgery, Dr. Smith will serve as associate system chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Northwell Health and associate director of the plastic surgery residency program for the health system.
