Northwell Health today announced that Peter McCann, MD, has been appointed director of orthopaedic surgery at Lenox Health Greenwich Village.

“Dr. McCann is an exceptionally skilled surgeon and his strong leadership experience will be an asset to our new team of fellowship trained orthopaedic   surgeons at our downtown location at Lenox Health Greenwich Village slated to open this fall,” said Nicholas Sgaglione, MD, chair of orthopaedic surgery at Northwell Health. “We are delighted to have Dr. McCann on board to spearhead our orthopaedic surgery efforts at our downtown location,” added Elliott Hershman, MD, chair of orthopaedic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Lenox Health Greenwich Village (LHGV) will be opening a $25 million, 22,000-square-foot ambulatory surgery suite with six operating rooms and a 23-bed recovery room, offering the highest-quality outpatient surgery technology.

The new ambulatory surgery suite is another example of Northwell Health’s commitment to filling the health care void in the West Village left by the 2010 closure of St. Vincent’s Hospital.  Opened in 2014, Lenox Health Greenwich Village represents a new model of community-based, patient-centered care that integrates a full range of medical services with access to 24-hour emergency care. Situated in the Phyllis and William Mack Pavilion, the medical facility debuted as Manhattan’s first freestanding Emergency Center.  In 2016, Lenox Health Greenwich opened the 13,000-square-foot Northwell Health Imaging Center, offering patients access to a full spectrum of radiology services.

“Our goal at  Lenox Health Greenwich Village is to provide easy access to high quality orthopaedic care at a convenient site in a brand new facility,” said Dr. McCann.   “Emphasizing patient-centered care, we will offer weekday appointments before and after work, weekend office hours as well as same day appointments for urgent conditions.”

Dr. McCann previously served as the chair of orthopedic surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and was a professor of orthopedic surgery at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He was also a founding member of the Insall Scott Kelly Institute (ISK) for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in 1991.  At ISK, he served as the fellowship director.  Prior to joining Beth Israel, he was attending staff in the department of orthopedic surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and chief of the orthopedic service at Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Hospital in Rockland County.

Dr. McCann has been recognized numerous times in New York magazine’s “New York’s Best Doctors” issue and has also been named in Castle Connolly’s America’s Top Doctors.  Nationally, US News and World Report honored Dr. McCann as one of the top 1% in orthopedic surgery.

A native New Yorker, Dr. McCann graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and attended Columbia College, receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in biochemistry.   Following a year working in a research lab at the Sloan-Kettering Institute, he received his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.

Following his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Dr. McCann completed the Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship at Columbia under the direction of his mentor, Charles S. Neer II, MD, who is widely recognized as the father of modern shoulder surgery.

Dr. McCann is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.   He is a member of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the pre-eminent international professional society for shoulder and elbow surgeons, as well as the American Orthopaedic Association, the oldest national orthopedic association in the world.

Dr. McCann is known for providing personalized service to his patients and is committed to the education of orthopedic surgeons through his over 100 presentations at national professional meetings. He has authored nearly 50 articles and chapters in textbooks, is a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and Emeritus Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Orthopedics, one of the most widely circulated professional journals in orthopedic surgery. He is also co-editor of Sports Medicine, a comprehensive 782-page textbook on sports medicine, currently in its 2nd printing.

Dr. McCann is a member of Northwell Health Physician Partners, the dedicated team of physicians and staff employed by Northwell Health.
