Operation Walk funds runner’s total hip replacement

Total hip replacement recipient Carol Hotaling with orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Danoff

Carol Hotaling, 55, had been sidelined for too long with chronic pain from “walking, standing, sleeping or sitting.” The half marathons she competed in were memories, set aside, like her running shoes. But now, the Caldwell, NJ, runner is looking forward to getting back on track, thanks to a free total hip replacement surgery she had at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream through Operation Walk USA.

Ms. Hotaling, who has been on disability due to osteoarthritis and has no health insurance, says she read about Operation Walk USA last year and submitted an application. Her surgery took place at LIJ Medical Center at Valley Stream on Februay 2.

Ms. Hotaling says the total hip replacement surgery is “an opportunity to get back to living and getting rid of the pain without the fear of all the bills piling up on me afterward. I used to work out six to seven days a week and run… I think having this surgery will be a major improvement to my quality of life.”

Jonathan Danoff, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement, performed Ms. Hotaling’s surgery. “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Operation Walk USA program at LIJ Valley Stream because it gives me the opportunity to give back right in our own area and help people who otherwise can’t afford the insurance to have surgery,” Dr. Danoff said.

Ms. Hotaling also underwent a dental procedure at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park prior to her hip replacement surgery to address a pre-existing dental issue that would have prevented the surgery. That procedure was also done free of charge.

Operation Walk USA helps uninsured people receive primary total hip or knee replacement surgeries free of cost. Eligible candidates must be US citizens or legal residents, have no insurance, and have incomes that fall within 300 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, which equates to $75,300 for a family of four. Along with the surgeries, pre-operative clearances and post-operative care are also being offered at no cost to qualified patients.
