Famed New York photographer Jordan Matter recently trained his lens on the patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, headlined by inspirational 13-year-old cancer survivor Stephanie Consiglio, who danced and leapt her way through the hospital in a video that’s since gone viral.

The YouTube video, part of Mr. Matter’s “10 Minute Photo Challenge” series, has already been viewed more than 1.3 million times – along with 1,800 comments – since it was posted on February 22. His Instagram post has 350,000 views.

Stephanie, of Glendale, Queens, was successfully treated at Cohen Children’s after being diagnosed with germ cell tumors in her pelvis in December 2015. The budding dancer put her talent to use in a triumphant and entertaining return to the hospital, interacting with staff and current patients. Stephanie wanted to give children hope and let them see what’s possible, especially if they focus on the things they love such as her passion for dance.

“This is a great example of a holistic approach to serious disease. Our doctors saw the importance of dance as one piece of the puzzle to Stephanie’s cure,” said Charles Schleien, MD, executive director at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. “Through that and all the anti-cancer therapies she received, she is now cancer free and her road to survivorship looks clear. It’s a wonderful inter-disciplinary approach to illness!”

The staff at Cohen Children’s Medical Center try to foster a fun and engaging environment where its young patients can still be kids, from paint parties, ice cream and smoothie carts to therapy dogs – all of which were on display in the “10 Minute Photo Challenge.” Mr. Matter also handed out toys to the young patients.

“It was one of the most emotional and rewarding photo shoots of my career, and an experience I will never forget,” said Mr. Matter.
