Mr. Kraut, who serves as executive vice president for strategy and analytics at Northwell Health and associate dean for strategy for the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, earned SHSMD’s highest honor for his leadership role in public health policy and in helping to further Northwell’s mission to improve the health of the communities it serves throughout the New York metropolitan area. He’s also chair of the New York State Public Health and Health Planning Council (PHHPC), where Mr. Kraut oversees public health planning, regulatory and certificate of need activities statewide. Mr. Kraut, of East Meadow, LI, is one of the few non-physician chairs in PHHPC’s 104-year history.
“Jeff's contributions to New York State go beyond his tireless service at PHHPC,” said Paul Francis, deputy secretary for New York State Health and Human Services. “Jeff led the Northwell team in developing the study of health care in Central Brooklyn that formed the basis of Governor Cuomo's $1.4 billion Vital Brooklyn plan. The report emphasized the importance of addressing social determinants of health and implementing other innovative approaches to transforming the health care delivery system. As a result of Jeff's efforts, 1.3 million people in Central Brooklyn will realize the benefits of a better healthcare system in the years ahead.”
An SHSMD board member since 2013, Mr. Kraut has excelled as an innovator throughout his 40-year career in health care. He joined Northwell in 1994 as vice president for planning and facilities management at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and has been instrumental in helping to build the health system into an $11 billion enterprise through a series of shrewd mergers, acquisitions and affiliated relationships.
“Jeff is truly deserving of this national recognition by the American Hospital Association,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO at Northwell Health, who has worked with Mr. Kraut for 22 years. “He is a tireless advocate for increasing access to high-quality care, especially in medically underserved communities. He has an incredible grasp of public health policy and how it can be used to improve New Yorkers’ quality of life.”
The Leadership Excellence Award is the highest honor a member can receive from SHSMD, a professional membership group of the American Hospital Association. It recognizes the best and brightest professionals in health care strategic planning, marketing, public relations, communications and physician relations, who, throughout their careers, have contributed innovations in their field, enhanced their profession, demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities, achieved strong results for their organizations, and shown continual progression in their roles.
