Northwell Health’s Manhattan facilities—Lenox Hill Hospital, Lenox Health Greenwich Village and Manhattan, Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital (MEETH)—have been recognized as LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leaders by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC). The three sites were evaluated by HRC’s 2018 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), a national survey that measures the inclusivity and equitable treatment of the lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender and queer community in healthcare facilities.
The Health Equality Index, which examined more than 1,600 sites nationwide, found that all three facilities achieved stand-out marks for their commitment to providing high-quality, humanistic care in a non-discriminatory environment. Those awarded with the Leader designation meet or exceed key criteria, including but not limited to LGBTQ patient-centered training for staff, guaranteed equal visitation, and inclusive policies for both patients and employees. Lenox Hill, MEETH, and Lenox Health Greenwich Village earned maximum points for each category, with Lenox Hill Hospital receiving a perfect score for the second year in a row.
“Serving the LGBTQ population is critical to who we are as an equity-minded health system, and we are incredibly proud to be a go-to resource for the community here in New York City,” said Joseph Schulman, regional executive director of Northwell Health’s western region. “We thank the HRC for recognizing our commitment to supporting each individual—patient, visitor or employee—who steps through our doors.”
Northwell’s New York City facilities continue their commitment to the LGBTQ population through a community-based approach to medicine. They are regular participants at NYC Pridefest, where Lenox Health Greenwich Village and Lenox Hill Hospital provide community health education each year. Northwell Health is also a donor and partner of The Center, a resource hub for the LGBTQ community in New York City. The Center’s close proximity to Lenox Health Greenwich Village allows visitors seamless access to inclusive, patient-centered medical care.
In addition, Northwell’s charitable donation played an integral part in the creation of the New York City AIDS Memorial, located in a park adjacent to Lenox Health Greenwich Village. Lenox Hill Hospital also offers a New York State designated AIDS center program, located at Manhattan, Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, that focuses on building community health through respectful and compassionate treatment.
