In response to the growth and geographic reach of Northwell Health’s physician network, the health system has restructured to improve the coordination of patient care delivered through its diverse service network.
Leading this new effort will be Thomas McGinn, MD, who has been appointed deputy physician-in-chief and senior vice president at Northwell Health to oversee all physician network operations. Dr. McGinn was previously Northwell’s senior vice president and executive director of the Medicine Service Line. On the administrative side, Dr. McGinn will team with Northwell’s Lisa Alvarenga, who was recently named senior vice president of ambulatory operations across the health system. She was previously vice president of the Medicine Service Line.
With more than 550 outpatient locations across Northwell’s service area and further expansion planned, the realignment focuses on enhancing the continuity of care among service lines, improving the consistency of the patient experience at outpatient facilities and better synching ambulatory and clinical strategies to be more efficient and patient-centric.
“As more and more care is delivered outside of the hospital setting, collaboration among clinical and administrative leaders is key to ensuring that our entire network meets the expectations of our patients and their families,” said Dr. McGinn.
Dr. McGinn and Ms. Alvarenga and their team will work closely with and coordinate Northwell's clinical service lines, Premium IPA (Independent Physicians Association), Clinical Joint Ventures, Large Physician Group Medical Operations and Ambulatory Facility Response.
Dr. McGinn will continue to serve as chair of medicine at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. Within Northwell’s clinical Department of Medicine, JoAnne Gottridge, MD, was appointed senior vice president of the Medicine Service Line; she was executive vice chair of the Department of Medicine at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center.
In addition, David Hirschwerk, MD, will assume the role of executive vice chair of clinical operations for the Department of Medicine at the North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center campuses. An infectious disease specialist, Dr. Hirschwerk earned his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical Center, and fellowship infectious disease at the Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical Center. He is an assistant professor at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine.
Dr. McGinn is an authority on evidence-based medicine, comparative effectiveness and medical education. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn and completed his residency in internal medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Bronx Municipal Hospital Center. He also received a Masters of Public Health degree from Columbia University.
Ms. Alvarenga, who joined Northwell in 2010, served as vice president of medicine services during a period of significant expansion across the health system. She oversaw strategic, operational and financial activities in the Departments of Medicine, Family Medicine, Dental Medicine and Occupational Medicine, Epidemiology and Prevention. Her role also included managing more than 100 ambulatory sites, 800-plus physicians and 14 hospitals. Ms. Alvarenga has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in health care administration from Baruch College/Mount Sinai School of Medicine
Dr. Gottridge has been with the health system since 1983 when she completed her internal medicine residency at North Shore University Hospital. She earned her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Gottridge is an associate professor at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine.
