Northwell Health Named No. 2 Nonprofit Employer of Veterans by Military Friendly

Northwell Health touched the lives of approximately 10,000 veterans in the greater New York City region through programs and advocacy.

Northwell Health has been named one of the nation’s top nonprofit employers of military veterans by the organization Military Friendly.

The New York-based health care system was rated the No. 2 nonprofit, earning high marks in each of the six categories Military Friendly used to rate the more than 200 companies it considered.

“Northwell Health values the leadership skills and dedication that veterans bring to any task,” said Michael J. Dowling, Northwell Health president and CEO. “Their service should also be rewarded. That’s why Northwell has made the hiring of veterans a priority.”

Northwell doubled its hiring goals and provided employment opportunities to more than 400 veterans in 2016, according to Juan Serrano, Director, Northwell Health’s Military and Veterans Liaison Services. Through programs and advocacy, Northwell also touched the lives of approximately 10,000 veterans in the greater New York City region.

Military Friendly weighed companies based on six criteria: Hiring and Onboarding, Opportunity and Advancement, Culture and Commitment, Support and Retention, Policies and Compliance, along with Recruiting and Sourcing. Northwell Health greatly exceeded the standard in each.

“All of our Military Friendly® award recipients set the standard for excellence,” said Daniel Nichols, Chief Product Officer of Victory Media and head of Military Friendly® development. “They offer exceptional examples of what it means not just to build a program that meets federal requirements, but one that serves the military and veteran community from classrooms to careers.”
