Northwell Health Appoints Darren I. Rohan, MD, as First Westchester Regional Director of Thoracic Surgery

Darren I. Rohan, MD, FACS

Northwell Health today announced the appointment of Darren I. Rohan, MD, FACS, as the first Westchester regional director of the health system’s thoracic surgery program. Advanced thoracic surgery services will be offered at both Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco and Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow, NY, reinforcing Northwell’s commitment to enhancing surgical care in Westchester.

The new, regional Thoracic Surgery Program offers “the very latest in diagnostics, robot-assisted surgery and non-surgical medical care for chest and stomach problems, acid reflux, hiatal hernia, lung cancer, lung disease, and other chest cancers,” said Dr. Rohan.

Dr. Rohan is a member of Northwell Health’s growing medical group practice, called Northwell Health Physician Partners, and is treating patients at Northern Westchester and Phelps. “Residents of Westchester County and surrounding areas now have access to advanced minimally invasive, video-assisted and robotic-assisted thoracic procedures,” he said.

“Dr. Rohan is a leader in robotic surgery with extensive experience in robotic surgery for treatment of tumors of the chest, lung and mediastinum, and esophageal diseases. One of his specific interests and areas of expertise is treatment of hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux robotically. We are proud to have one of the most accomplished surgeons in this field practicing in Westchester County at Phelps Hospital and Northern Westchester Hospital. I am certain that Dr. Rohan will bring a skill set in thoracic surgery utilizing the da Vinci robot that will benefit countless patients who otherwise would have had much more invasive thoracic procedures,” said S. Jacob Scheinerman, MD, Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Under Dr. Rohan’s leadership, the new Thoracic Surgery Program in the region will focus on:

  • Robotic and Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery
  • Lung and Esophageal Cancer
  • Mesothelioma
  • Thymus and Mediastinal Tumor
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
  • Barrett’s Esophagus
  • Hiatal Hernia
  • Achalasia
  • Hyperhidrosis
  • Surveillance Program – Lung Cancer Screening

Dr. Rohan also serves as assistant professor of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, and is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgery, the New York Medical Society, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
