Northwell Health today announced the launch of the podcast series Health Story, an audio exploration of patient experiences that highlight the latest innovations and health trends. The inaugural episode features the remarkable narrative of Dan Lasko, a former Marine who worked with Northwell Health’s 3D printing experts and two Long Island-based firms, to solve a life-altering impediment for the wounded warrior.
“Health Story showcases how gifted Northwell Health doctors and researchers adapt the latest advances to heal real people every day,” said Terry Lynam, the health system’s senior vice president and chief public relations officer. “This series takes a look at the patient and their journey from sickness to wellness. We couldn’t have a stronger opening episode than the story of Dan Lasko.”
Mr. Lasko, 33, lost his left leg below the knee in 2004 as a result of an IED attack while serving in Afghanistan. An avid triathlete, Mr. Lasko struggled to transition to and from the water – until he met researcher Todd Goldstein, PhD, the director of Northwell Ventures’ 3D Printing Laboratory.
“I do a lot of triathlons. I have a running leg and a cycling leg. But I never swam with a leg,” Mr. Lasko explains in the episode titled “The Return,” which is narrated by award-winning TV and radio broadcaster David North. Mr. Goldstein, the researcher who designed and fabricated “The Fin” prosthetic, which helped Mr. Lasko return to the water, said that the device will eventually be available to amputees everywhere.
Health Story podcasts are scheduled to air each month and will explore the impact cutting-edge technology has on health care professionals and the patients they treat.
