Four epilepsy programs within Northwell Health system have been reaccredited by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC).
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and the Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park have each been recognized as Level 4 facilities.
Level 4 epilepsy centers are equipped to provide the highest level of medical, psychological, neuropsychological and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with intractable epilepsy. These centers offer intensive neurodiagnostic monitoring and a complete evaluation for epilepsy surgery, including intracranial electrodes and a broad range of surgical procedures for epilepsy, according to the NAEC guidelines.
Level 3 epilepsy centers deliver a range of medical, neuropsychological and psychosocial services needed to treat patients with refractory epilepsy. In addition, Level 3 centers offer noninvasive evaluation for epilepsy surgery, straight-forward resective epilepsy surgery and implantation of the vagus nerve stimulator. These centers do not perform intracranial evaluations or other more complex epilepsy surgery.
“We are honored that our epilepsy programs have received this prestigious NAEC recognition,” said Souhel Najjar, MD, senior vice president and executive director of the Northwell Health’s neurology services. “It is a testament to our health system’s dedicated, multidisciplinary team of specialized epilepsy doctors, nurses, monitoring technologists, pharmacists, and social workers.”
